Information |
| Sharjah
- "the city of culture" |
| |
Stretching across 2590sq.km and lying in the
heart of the UAE, the city of Sharjah has made
a remarkable impact by winning "The Cultural
Capital of the Arab World" Award for the year
1998. |
|
This enchanting city offers a lot to see. Here
the modern and advanced city, with high rise
buildings, beautifully juxtaposes itself with
traditional atmosphere.
"Enough of concrete and let us build the
human being"
The slogan by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan
Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, the Ruler of Sharjah
since 1972, has now become a reality. His Highness
is a member of the Supreme Council of the United
Arab Emirates, which governs the affairs of
the Federation. During his rule, Sharjah has
experienced rapid growth in various fields;
the most important development being in the
field of human resources. The city's phenomenal
transformation into a modern and advanced society
is the fruit of the strenuous and consistent
efforts of its Ruler to develop this emirate
in a scientific and a comprehensive way.
|
| The
city - the 3rd largest of the Emirates,
encompasses some of the finest scenery
of the country. Its geographical layout
- with both an East and a West Coast,
makes it easily accessible for trade and
commerce. Furthermore, Sharjah's geographical
location between East and West makes it
a vital transit point for many International
flights. |
|
|
Sharjah
- in close proximity to other Emirates |
|
Located in the center of U.A.E, the distance
to Dubai is just a 15-min drive (i.e. 15 Kms.
approx.) connected by one of the most advanced
road networks in the country. Abu Dhabi, just
a 90-min drive away, is about 200 km from Sharjah
and 185 kms. from Dubai.
|
| |
This
enchanting city treasures traditional market
places, art
centers, museums, ornate mosques, humanitarian
centers, unspoiled beaches, lush green parks
and amusement centers for families, etc
|
|
Foreigners
enjoy a superb lifestyle with excellent accommodation,
leisure and sports facilities, education and
health services. International fairs, including
book fairs, textile fairs, etc. are held each
year attracting thousands of people.
|
|
Sharjah, one of the largest cargo hubs
in the world is the key commercial center
in the Middle East, having both natural
assets and a well-developed infrastructure.
In 1995 the SAIF Zone ( Sharjah Airport
International Free Zone )was established
on 10 million sq.m. of land. Investors
flock into the emirate as its free zones
offer them lease on land, along with other
tax free benefits.
|
|
|
|
Sharjah has traditionally been a trading point,
thanks to its strategic location at the cross
roads between East and West. |
| |
For centuries Sharjah has
been an important sea port for trade & commerce
in the gulf region. Today it has evolved in
its strategic role with its modern airport and
sea ports. Sharjah Airport was the first Category
II airport in the Arabian Gulf with an annual
capacity of over 2 million passengers. It is
the main exporting airport for sea-air cargo
in the United Arab Emirates. The emirate boasts
of having ports both on the Arabian Gulf on
one side and another on the Indian Ocean.
|
| |
| Climate |
|
The U.A.E is blessed with glorious sunshine
throughout the year. Between November to April
the weather is ideal, being warm & sunny with
cool evenings and daytime temperature ranging
from 18-30 degrees Celsius. From May till
September the climate is hot with mid-day
temperatures in July/August reaching up to
40-degrees Celsius. There is 100% humidity
during these 2 months. Nights are also warm
with average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.
|
| |
| Population |
| |
The 1995 census estimated the population in
this emirate to be 500,000 as compared to
the 1985 census, which had marked the population
to be 265,000. The native people in Sharjah
are Arabs whose ancestors arrived in the area
some 6000 years ago. |
| |
|
| Religion |
| |
Arab Islamic culture predominates in Sharjah
but everyday life is marked with a high degree
of tolerance towards a large expatriate community.
Islam first arrived in this region during
the lifetime of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).
Communities of Christians and other religious
denominations practice their religion freely
within the UAE. |
| |
|
| Economy |
| |
Sharjah's gross domestic product in 1992 had
risen to Dhs.9.2 billion (US$2.5billion) with
oil and gas constituting 75% of the income.
The production of gas condensate is about
60,000 barrels per day. Sharjah has the country's
3rd largest concentration of banks whose numbers
now total 28, representing a total investment
of Dhs. 6 billion.
It's per capita income 1999 was rated at US
Dollars 17,760 per annum. |
| |
|
| Business
opportunities |
Numerous reasons have contributed to Sharjah's
pre-eminence as the leading industrial base.
Located strategically between 3 continents,
it has a catchment market of nearly a billion
people in the oil rich Gulf States, Africa,
Iran and the Indian sub-continent. A cornerstone
of Sharjah's commitment to the industry
is its policy of not compelling its investors
to operate from a free zone in order to
enjoy its unique business incentives. Unlike
other places in the region one can set up
business or industry anywhere in Sharjah
and take advantage of its well structured
business packages which include:
|
|
|
Stable
political environment
No income or corporate tax
100%
repatriation of profits and capital
Abundant
and inexpensive energy supplies
Global
telecommunication links and
Stable
and freely convertible currency
A pro-industry government policy has led to a
12% annual industrial growth rate, which in itself
speaks for Sharjah's popularity as an industrial
base in the Middle East. For centuries Sharjah
has been an important sea port in the Gulf touched
by ships from India, the Far East, Africa and
Europe. Today it has regained its role with the
advantage of having two ports on the Arabian Gulf
namely the Hamriya Port and Port Khalid, and Port
Khor Fakkan on the Indian Ocean, the East Coast.

| Shoppers
Haven |
Sharjah
is famous for its magnificent traditional Souks both
old and new. Bargain hunters can explore the myriad
handicraft shops which stock everything from carpets
to antiques, Arabic jewellery, Onyx and semi-precious
stones. The dazzling gold souk offers prices which
are music to the ears. Tons and tons of gold hang
inside the shop windows, luring the willing to convert
savings into hard metal.
In the old souks, one sees shops selling nargilahs,
tall hubble-bubble pipes in which smoke is passed
through water veils with decorated edges; pantaloons;
embroidered anklets; dress lengths with similarly
embroidered necklines; and sari lengths made from
Orient raw silks and cottons.
Al Wahda Street can be likened to a Champs Elysee
where classy boutiques rub shoulders, stocking the
finest haute couture from Europe and the United States.
Each year Sharjah holds the 'Ramadan Shopping Festival'
when all the shops that deal in renowned International
brand names like Christian Dior, YSL, etc. as well
as others, along with the new most modern shopping
centers, open their doors with sales and special discounts.
International fairs are held each year too which attract
thousands of people from the neighboring countries.
