China Southern Airlines resumes flights tonight

Sharjah

China's Southern Airlines resumes its flights to the UAE from tonight, after they were suspended on September 30, aviation officials confirmed yesterday evening.

The first flight touches down at Sharjah International Airport at 11.50pm, demonstrating the stability and security in the region, even as the U.S. and British military campaign against targets in Afghanistan begins to wind down, they indicated.

"We will resume our thrice weekly

incoming flights on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday," Liu Jun yi, Mideast regional manager of the state owned airline, said.

The outgoing flights leave Sharjah airport at 23.50 hours on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The Beijing - Sharjah flights go via Urumqi in Western china's Turkic Xinjiang region, passing over Iran, Oman and Pakistan, which has opened its airspace to U.S. military aircraft flying missions over Afghanistan. Dr. Ghanem Al Hajri, director general at the airport, noted the carrier has been flying to Sharjah since 1996.
