The local horse-racing season starting September has had Singapore Airlines Cargo to date flying in some 500 horses to Sharjah, from the UK, Ireland, the U.S. and Australia.
More horses are coming in every week.
The horses form only one component for the cargo airline, which has witnessed full cargo flights via Sharjah International Airport over the past three months.
The carrier, which operates 26 freighter flights a week via Sharjah - with the ground handling done by Lufthansa Cargo - has also started new routes via the airport.
Four weekly cargo flights have recently started coming in from the U.S. direct to Sharjah, from Chicago and New York - two from each of these cities. The flights, operated by 747-400 aircraft, are loaded mainly with machinery and equipment, apart from other commodities - and, of course, horses.
Shokat Nasser, Gulf sales and operations manager, highlighted the efficiency of the

'interchange flights' at Sharjah: "The swap service is done very successfully here,
with two aircraft swapping their complete loads simultaneously between the B747 freighters of Singapore Airlines Cargo and Lufthansa Cargo in less than two hours."
"Sharjah Airport Authority has helped us improve loads via the airport thanks to efficient handling times, professional staff and modern equipment," he added. "The airport also provides personalised service and cost-effective facilities."
Singapore Airlines Cargo is one of the leading carriers operating direct freighter services from Copenhagen, Dublin, Amsterdam, Sweden, London, Paris, the U.S., Australia and other destinations.
Added Ali Kombargi, Freight Centre director at Sharjah: "Our policy is to work always with our clients as partners where we provide the maximum support in terms of time, cost and services to our clients, to strengthen their businesses." |
