From
a mere 2,000 tonnes per month in 1990, the
airport's current monthly average volume
stands at 24,000 tonnes, and is growing
at 25%. Sharjah Airport also handles the
largest volumes among all airports in the
UAE, besides completely dominating the country's
charter operators' business with a 90% share,
Lufthansa, one of the world's prestigious
airlines, operates it's largest cargo hub
outside Germany from Sharjah. 5,000 tonnes
per month is a clear vindication of their
faith. Talking of trust, more than 100 airlines
believe in their future with Sharjah Airport.
Sharjah Airport leads the region in dual
sea-air mode of transport. Sea-air strikes
an optimum balance between cost and time
and is being increasingly used by cargo
agents and freight forwarders. Typically,
cargo routed by sea-air from Tokyo to Frankfurt
via Sharjah, can trim upto 40% of the cost
of pure air-freight, while slashing a third
of the time taken by ship-only mode. Sea-air
cargo volumes handled by Sharjah airport
crossed 20, 000 tonnes in 1995, with an
average growth rate of 33%. It also handles
more than 60% of UAE's sea-air business.
Figures that have placed the airport at
the number two spot world-wide after Seattle
in this exciting mode of transport.
